Weinig builds largest panel gluing press ever |

Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) consists of glue-layered solid wood elements. Manufactured in Bad St. Leonhard, Austria, the product heralds a new era in the efficient building of pre-fabricated houses. The wall or ceiling elements can be up to 16 m long, 3 m wide and, with 7 cross layers, can be up to 350 mm thick.
The heart of the production facilities is the DIMTER ProfiPress C 16200 from Weinig Group. The press weighs 170 tons, making it the largest panel gluing press ever built in the world. It is used to manufacture the individual panel layers from finger-jointed lamellae, 100 to 290 mm wide, 20 to 50 mm thick and 8 to 16 m long. These lamellae come straight from a WACO Hydromat 5000 with attached glue application system for EPI glue. The feed speed is a maximum of 150 m/m. The ProfiPress can process a maximum of 7 panels per minute for 16 m lamellae and maximum 10 panels for 8 m lamellae. A cross-saw cuts the continuously glued panels into widths of 1.5 to 3 m. Special filling and emptying functions ensure that the machine is extremely flexible.
The production of solid wood elements is on a commission basis, and is controlled via a central computer. The press can process an average of 200 to 300 m³ per shift. The factory at Bad St. Leonhard is currently manufacturing using a two-shift operation and will soon be adding a third shift.
